Thermometer Calibration Helper | Ice Bath & Boiling Point by Altitude
Thermometer Calibration Helper
Dial in your instant-read and probe thermometers. We’ll walk you through an ice-bath test (32°F) and an altitude-adjusted boiling-point test—then store offsets for each probe. Eat Wild.

Offset = Target − Reading. Add this offset to future readings (or configure it on probes that support calibration).
Step-by-Step
Ice-Bath Test (32°F / 0°C)
- Fill a container to the top with crushed ice, add just enough cold water to fill the gaps. Stir 30–60 sec.
- Insert probe tip into the ice slurry (not touching the sides or bottom), wait until stable.
- Enter the reading above and save. Target is 32°F (0°C).
Boiling-Point Test (212°F)
- Bring a pot of water to a full rolling boil. Avoid salt for this test.
- Hold probe tip in the boiling water without touching the pot. Wait until stable.
- Enter the reading above. Target is altitude-adjusted (see top of page).
Store offsets per probe and revisit before big cooks. For precision, calibrate a few minutes before use.
